How To Remove Caffeine From Tea



Caffeine may be good for you in some cases and in short periods of time only. It is a stimulant and will make you wide awake, alert and a feeling of energy surge. It raises your blood pressure, raises your blood sugar levels and stimulates the central nervous system.

If you need some energy boost - finishing an important project, studying for an exam, getting interviewed for a job - then caffeine may be a solution. But do not overuse it as opposite results may manifest - lack of energy, fatigue, etc.

You can get caffeine from tea. Black tea has a lot more caffeine than oolong and green tea. Coffee has a higher caffeine content than tea.

People nowadays drink tea for the health benefits it brings to their body. Tea contain antioxidants that scavenge harmful free radicals in the body. Aside from that, vitamin c and other nutrients which are beneficial for the body can also be found in tea.

Drinking tea for the reason mentioned above requires more than 3 cups spread throughout the day. With that amount, caffeine would be present in your body throughout the day which could be detrimental for your health. The benefits of tea may be clouded by the ill effects of caffeine.

There are decaffeinated teas commercially available. These does not mean that caffeine is totally eliminated. A large percentage however is removed.

Another option is a process that removes around 80% of the caffeine content from tea leaves which you can do right in your own home. It's very simple.

  • Boil water more than the usual for your tea.
  • Pour the boiled water in your tea leaves and allow to steep for 30-35 seconds.
  • Discard the water after that amount of time - most of the caffeine mixes with boiled water easily than the other components of tea. The higher the water temperature and the length of time the tea leaves are mixed with water, the higher the caffeine content will be removed.
  • Pour again boiled water for your usual tea preparation
  • That's it. A decaffeinated tea prepared by yourself.

Now you can drink tea as much as you like ingesting beneficial antioxidants without having the bad effects of caffeine overdose.
